Welcome to a pretty special edition of our quarterly newsletter.
Not only has it been an extremely busy time for the team in terms of both project progress and social value contributions, but we also have some exciting announcements to make. This week we were officially presented with our Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunity, and also found out our ranking in this years Best Companies to Work For list. Read on to find out more!
I’d just like to use this time to thank everyone for continuing their extra-curricular activities for our 50th year in business. Since the last newsletter we’ve raised another £3,713.61, as well as £7,200 for the Snow Dog sponsorship and £2,711.71 worth of volunteering hours. The team have also completed a refurbishment to The Kirkwood’s dining facilities worth over £13,000, all progressing to our final target of £50,000.
We headed into the final quarter on strong footing, continuing our long-standing relationships with existing customers, as well as building foundations with new ones. This enables us to continue to play our part in delivering on crucial projects to transform health and educational facilities across the region.

West Yorkshire based construction company Illingworth & Gregory (I&G) is celebrating five years as part of the Sewell Group, having joined the collective of built environment companies in 2017 in a move to generate new opportunities across the region.
The company, founded in 1972, works across the North of England and is part of the Sewell Estates arm of the Group which delivers advisory services, construction, facilities management, and investment partnerships for public and private sector customers.
A homegrown business which dates back to 1876 and now employs 500 people celebrated in style after receiving two major awards on the same day.
Sewell Group enjoyed a royal breakfast with the monarch’s representative in East Yorkshire as the Lord Lieutenant presented the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Promoting Opportunity.
A delegation from the company then travelled by executive coach to London to make their sixth appearance in The UK’s 100 Best Companies to Work For Awards, this year being listed at 45.
Yorkshire-based construction companies Illingworth & Gregory (I&G) and Sewell Construction, both part of the wider Sewell Group, attended a Meet the Buyer event hosted by YORhub to enhance their trusted supply chain network.
I&G and Sewell Construction joined 25 other businesses at the event, which offered an opportunity for subcontractors and suppliers to meet the building and civil engineering contractors appointed to each of the YORhub frameworks.
As The Kirkwood celebrate its 35th year providing end-of-life care for those in Kirkwood, the team celebrated the official opening of an exclusive space dedicated to the health and wellbeing of its staff.
Staff from The Kirkwood were joined by I&G to celebrate with a grand reveal of their newly refurbished and upgraded dining facilities. Together the team’s enjoyed refreshments and a plaque unveiling ceremony to welcome staff members into their brand-new space.
I&G recently invited a selection of electrical students from Castleford College of Construction for a site tour of the new Ophthalmology Unit at St James’s Hospital.
The students were guided round by Site Manager Garry Higgins, and Phil Perfect from Richardson’s Electrical, who provided the budding electricians with an insight into the industry and experience of a live construction site.
I&G have been working with the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust on multiple improvement and expansion projects across Rotherham Hospital for many years.
Wellbeing has been a focus for the Trust and I&G from the start, and the team have continued their efforts to provide more welcoming internal and external spaces not only for patients, but staff too.
Work is well underway on Barnsley Hospital’s new £7.3m Intensive Care Unit (ICU), which will be a landmark for Barnsley in terms of future-proofing the town against current and future demand for intensive care beds.
As I&G start the countdown to completion, clinical leads at the hospital have been invited for fortnightly familiarisation tours of their new facility.
The first of the tours took place on Friday 19 August, and for Consultant in Anesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Tim Wenham, it was his first time looking around the new Unit.
The team have also recently invited Level 3 Site Carpentry students from Wakefield College for a tour as well as site hazard workshops, programme build exercises and feedback with a Q&A session.
Students at a West Yorkshire Grammar School are helping to shape site rules as the remodelling and refurbishment of their former library progresses.
Trinity Academy Grammar School in Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, will have an extended dining provision and additional classrooms in a matter of weeks to tackle oversubscription and meet growing population demand.
During the construction phase, the I&G team behind the project have held site safety workshops with the children, helping them to understand what’s involved in the building work being carried out in close proximity to their school, and asking for their thoughts on how they would like the team to behave on site for maximum health and safety.
Where are you from?
I am from a small village in Liversedge called Robbertown
How long have you worked for I&G?
I have been with I&G since February when I was on three days a week whilst finishing my college course. I then went full time in June and now work four days a week alongside attending college once a week to complete my HNC course.
What project are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on St James’ Hospital in Leeds on a ward refurb for the Ophthalmology Unit. I’m enjoying it as it’s a big job with loads of different challenges to overcome. I have a great team here with me in Garry Higgins and George Downham so I’m learning a lot. It’ll look great when it’s done.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to spend time with my family, especially my little niece and nephew. I also like playing football on Sundays and play snooker with my family every Tuesday.
